Pasteur Institute of Iran Exports BCG Vaccine to Venezuela: A Milestone in Health Diplomacy

The Pasteur Institute of Iran—the country’s oldest and one of its most prestigious scientific and health institutions—has played a pivotal role in controlling and preventing infectious diseases in Iran and the region for over a century. Among its key achievements are the production and distribution of vital vaccines for diseases such as cholera, smallpox, rabies, hepatitis, typhoid, and tuberculosis, which have not only met domestic demand but have also been exported globally for decades.

In a significant boost to Iran’s health diplomacy, Prof. Ehsan Mostafavi, Director-General of the institute, announced the export of more than 700,000 doses of the BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin) vaccine to Venezuela. He described the move as a landmark in international health cooperation, reinforcing Iran’s scientific and technical influence in global healthcare. This shipment marks the institute’s largest vaccine export in decades.

Prof. Mostafavi noted that the BCG vaccine, critical for tuberculosis prevention, has been continuously manufactured at the Pasteur Institute of Iran since 1947 and meets international standards. The institute now aims to expand its vaccine export portfolio, aligning with global health needs.

As the international vaccine market grows, Iran seeks to strengthen its role in the global health supply chain. The Pasteur Institute of Iran remains committed to advancing public health in developing nations while upholding its historic mission and national responsibilities.
