Pasteur Institute of Iran Participated in Biological Weapons Convention Meetings in Geneva

The Islamic Republic of Iran is a member state of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), the multilateral treaty that bans the development, production, and use of biological and toxin weapons. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the treaty, which also facilitates international cooperation in peaceful science and outbreak response. National activities related to the convention are coordinated by a multisectoral technical committee. The Pasteur Institute of Iran has been a member of this committee since the early 2000s, and its researchers have regularly attended the annual BWC meetings in Geneva, Switzerland. From December 10 to 17, 2025, Dr. Kayhan Azadmanesh attended the seventh session of the Working Group on Strengthening the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) and the concurrent Meeting of States Parties on behalf of the institute, held at the United Nations Office in Geneva (UNOG). In April 2025, he lectured on the Convention's Science and Technology review mechanisms at a training course for national stakeholders, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Dr. Azadmanesh has also been recently nominated as an Expert to the UN Secretary-General’s Mechanism for Investigation of Alleged Use of Biological and Toxin Weapons.
