Department of Mycobacteriology and Pulmonary Research

The Department of Mycobacteriology and Pulmonary Research was established in 1959. This department is one of the oldest and most important TB diagnostic and research centers in the country that has had an important role in control of this disease.

Activities of the Department of Mycobacteriology and Pulmonary Research are based on specialized services, diagnosis and research. The activities are carried out in the laboratory of routine diagnosis of TB and the laboratory for determination of drug sensitivity and X/MDR-TB. This department participates effectively in public health by monitoring patients with suspected tuberculosis and direct smear tests, culture, antibiogram, differential tests and molecular diagnosis of tuberculosis tests (PCR).

 

Specific activities:

     ·         TB treatment according to the DOTS (Directly observed treatment, short-course) strategy

     ·         Epidemiological study of drug resistance to determine the strategy of combating XDR and MDR strains

     ·         Genetic study of rifampicin and isoniazid drug resistant strains in high-risk areas

     ·         Cooperation with regional and trans-regional organizations such as WHO, EMRO and IVATLD

 
Research Activities:
  • Detection of TB-complex with PCR assay

  • Confirming MDR-/XDR-TB strains using phenotypic and genotypic tests

  • Detection of nontuberculous mycobacteria (Atypical mycobacteria)

  • Preparation of sensitive and drug resistant mycobacteria strains bank

  • Preparation of sputum bank

 

 Projects:

       ·      Evaluation of methyltransferase enzyme coding gene (Rv1988) and PPE2 (Rv0256c) expression on MDR, XDR and Sensitive Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains isolated from patients with pulmonary tuberculosis.

       ·     Evaluation of correlation between systemic proinflammation and profile of exosomal miRNAs in Tuberculosis infection.

       ·     Determination of trend of Mycobacterium tuberculosis genetic diversity in Iranian population with tuberculosis by IS6110 RFLP, Spoligotyping and MIRU-VNTR.

       ·     Determination the prevalence of polymicrobial infections (Mixed infection) in Tuberculosis and evaluation of its impact on treatment of patients.

       ·      Evaluation of induced cellular cytokine profile in response to Rifampin resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains.

       ·     Determination of transcriptomic profiles in human epithelial and macrophage infected cells with dominant Mycobacterium tuberculosis genotype in Iranian TB patients with RNA-seq analysis to find novel diagnostic biomarkers.

       ·     Identification of different nontuberculous mycobacteria species in suspected tuberculosis patients by multi locus sequence analysis (MLSA) from 2009 to 2014.

       ·     Use of phenotypic and genotypic methods to identify of different Nocardia species in suspected tuberculosis specimens.

       ·     Evaluation of the changes on D2-dopamine and serotonin (5-HT2B, 5-HT2C) gene receptors expression in tuberculosis patients, and in vitro pharmacogenetic study of them.

       ·     Modified Mycobacterium bovis BCG genome via induction of PE32/PPE65 protein from RD9 region of Mycobacterium marinum strains to improvement of BCG vaccine under in vitro condition.

       ·     Purification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis membrane and secretory glycoproteins by concanavalin affinity capture and its identification by Mass spectrometry.
